VITAL STATISTICS

Name: Lisa Shepherd

Industry: Hairdressing

Education: Normal non-private and salt of the earth school, so had to try hard and work even harder to even get noticed.

Training: City and Guilds (in my day) and constant hands on!

When was the ‘lightbulb’ moment that prompted you to start your own business?

There never was.  I worked for a wonderful hairstylist called Umberto Giannini for 17 years.  Sadly he passed away at an early age so I had to stand on my own two feet. I opened my first business in 2002.

What did you do before that prepared you to go it alone?

I don’t think anything prepares you to go it alone.  It’s tough and daunting but I just do the same now as I’ve always done and surround myself with brilliant people. What I don’t know – I ask!

Every business should have a niche or USP, what is different about Lisa Shepherd Hair?

Our USP is colour.  I’m sure it’s in my DNA – and consequently in the members of my team.  You have to see it and feel it to ‘get it’ – if that makes sense. I suppose you could say I’m psychic about hair, that and being a woman myself I know what women want. My job is to make my clients look gorgeous and for them to enjoy the experience. If clients ask for something that’s not going to work for them then it’s learning to be tactful.  You only get that through experience, natural manners and attitude.

As a successful entrepreneur how do you balance running a business with perfecting your craft and staying relevant?

Staying current should be in-built.  I get inspiration from everything and everyone, but mostly from within.  It’s a gut feeling.  I go by what feels right – or wrong – and trust my instinct.

As a hair colour expert, what advice can you give to maintaining luscious locks?

It’s all about the tone. If you have the tone of your hair wrong it instantly makes you look 10 years older.  Get it right and you’ll look ten years younger.  See someone reputable who can look at you through new eyes.  What’s most important to me is that I create the right hair for the right woman – not just for the trend.

What hair trends should we be looking out for this season?

Whatever makes us feel good! From a tone point of view it’s going rich, luxurious glamorous and expensive! Golds and shine, shine – and more shine!
